The reference photo for this was a photo by Ben Shahn for the WPA of this man and his wife. I wanted to capture his gauntness and extreme height.

I love drawing clowns. This one was done from memory and imagination. The proportions aren't completely correct, but perhaps that adds to the sad quality of the expression.

This drawing was done from a photograph made by Dorthea Lange for the WPA during the depression.  I was struck by the despair communicated by the body language.
